Why is it the world is so passionate about soccer? What makes this simple sport so appealing to so many? There is no elaborate equipment, it can be played in the street, in a backyard, in your office. Soccer is universal.

According to FIFA's official magazine:

A large-scale FIFA survey involving its then 207 member associations shows that football has strengthened its position as the world’s number one sport since the last Big Count in the year 2000. Among the most pleasing signs is the continuing growth of the women’s game.

The number one spot! FIFA estimates that there are nearly "265 million male and female players in addition to 5 million referees and officials make a grand total of 270 million people – or 4% of the world's population – who are actively involved in the game of football. That's a lot of people!

And according to Statista, "It can also be observed that the number of boys and girls who played soccer in high school in the United States has also been on a slow, but steady increase since 2009. The number of high school girls who play soccer is almost equal to the number of boys. All in all, soccer, which is already highly popular in Europe and South America, now seems to enjoy a growing popularity among Americans as well."
